Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Kevin Kline set the stage for A Big Bold Beautiful Journey
The upcoming romantic adventure “A Big Bold Beautiful Journey” introduces audiences to an eccentric pair played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Kevin Kline. Opening in Philippine cinemas on September 17, the film begins with a peculiar stop at a car rental agency where Colin Farrell’s character, David, encounters a quirky cashier (Waller-Bridge) and a mechanic (Kline).
The duo persuades David to take an old 1994 Saturn GL, complete with a retro GPS. This unusual start sets him on a cross-country adventure with Sarah, played by Margot Robbie, whom he meets at a wedding.
Director Kogonada shared his vision for the roles, explaining that he wanted actors with theater backgrounds to add a layer of theatricality. “Phoebe and Kevin are from the theater, and that scene called for a certain kind of theatricality and playfulness that for me was central to this story,” he said.
Writer Seth Reiss, known for The Menu, praised their chemistry. He described their performances as joyful and dynamic, elevating the scene and creating a fun contrast with Farrell. Producer Bradley Thomas highlighted the importance of Waller-Bridge and Kline in shaping the tone of the movie, saying their presence signals to the audience that the journey will be smart and entertaining.
Even the GPS holds symbolic weight in the film. Designed to look like both a Nintendo controller and HAL from 2001: A Space Odyssey, it poses the key question: “Do you want to go on a big bold beautiful journey?” This device pushes the characters not only through their physical travels but also through an exploration of love and connection.
Distributed by Columbia Pictures, “A Big Bold Beautiful Journey” arrives in Philippine cinemas on September 17.
