New protection options help independent Filipino workers prepare for healthcare costs and financial uncertainty.
As more Filipinos pursue freelance, gig, and self-employed careers, BPI AIA is expanding access to medical and life protection solutions designed for workers who may not have employer-sponsored health benefits.
The move comes as independent workers such as virtual assistants, online sellers, ride-hailing drivers, creative professionals, and small business owners face growing concerns over healthcare costs and income disruption during medical emergencies.
Through BPI AIA Freelancer Protection options available under BPI AIA Future Ready and BPI AIA Aspire, customers can access medical benefits alongside life insurance coverage.
These solutions are designed to help cover hospital confinement, surgical procedures, critical care, emergency treatment, and recovery support, while also providing long-term financial protection.
“Today’s workforce looks very different from what it did years ago. More Filipinos are building careers outside traditional employment, but their need for medical and life protection remains just as important,” said Karen Custodia, BPI AIA Chief Executive Officer.
The offerings are meant to supplement existing HMO and PhilHealth coverage or provide added support for those without employer-sponsored medical benefits.
While HMOs and PhilHealth may help with consultations, outpatient care, and portions of hospitalization costs, many Filipinos remain exposed to large out-of-pocket expenses from critical illnesses, surgeries, ICU confinement, and long-term recovery.
BPI AIA said customers can choose from different levels of medical coverage based on their needs and budget.
The medical rider is renewable up to age 80, while life insurance coverage may extend up to age 100, allowing protection to remain in place even as careers and income sources change.
For freelancers and gig workers, a medical emergency can affect both health and livelihood.
“When you work independently, a medical emergency doesn’t just affect your health. It can also disrupt your income and long-term plans,” Custodia said.
Through BPI AIA Freelancer Protection, the company hopes more Filipinos will see healthcare and life coverage as essential parts of financial readiness, regardless of employment type.
As work becomes more flexible, protection must also become more accessible, helping independent Filipino workers stay prepared for life’s uncertainties.
