Starbucks has relaunched its Kyoto Matcha Latte in Japan, a limited-edition chilled cup drink that first debuted in 2008. The return marks the 20th anniversary of the Starbucks chilled cup series, which started in 2005 with Suntory as its manufacturer.
The Kyoto Matcha Latte features the same mellow milk base from its original release, now with a higher matcha concentration for a richer flavor. Starbucks highlights its well-balanced sweetness that complements the depth of matcha and creaminess of milk.
The design keeps its Kyoto inspiration, showcasing a five-story pagoda and traditional gardens, layered with green and metallic gold accents to convey premium quality.
Starbucks suggests pairing the Kyoto Matcha Latte with a tuna mayonnaise rice ball, where the savory nori and tuna elevate the matcha taste, and mayonnaise enhances the milk’s richness. A steamed cheesecake is another recommended pairing, blending creamy cheese with the drink’s deep matcha aroma.
To celebrate the revival, Starbucks Japan is running a campaign until September 30. One winner will receive a trip for two to Seattle, the birthplace of Starbucks, while 100 others will win limited-edition 20th anniversary charm sets. Participation requires posting a favorite “moment with chilled cup” on Twitter or Instagram using the official Starbucks account and the designated hashtag.
The Kyoto Matcha Latte is now available nationwide in Japan at convenience stores and supermarkets for 219 yen.
