Philippine Geothermal to Plant A Million Trees Across 7 Luzon Provinces

The Philippine Geothermal Production Company, Inc. (PGPC) has launched a large-scale re-greening program that aims to plant more than one million trees over the next five years. The initiative will cover 1,200 hectares across seven Luzon provinces, supporting both forest restoration and biodiversity protection.

Target sites include the foothills of Mt. Makiling in Batangas and Laguna, Mt. Daklan in Benguet, Mt. Malinao in Albay, Mt. Labo in Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, and Quezon, as well as selected areas of the Bicol Natural Park. These areas surround PGPC’s current and future geothermal steam fields.

“This re-greening program underscores PGPC’s dual commitment to clean energy and the environment,” said Napoleon L. Saporsantos Jr., PGPC President. “It reflects our dedication to environmental stewardship as we develop new geothermal energy sources that will significantly contribute to the country’s renewable energy portfolio.”

The project was formally launched with a ceremonial planting of 1,000 seedlings at PGPC’s geothermal reservation in Barangay Sugcad, Malinao, Albay. The event was attended by government agencies, local leaders, community groups, and PGPC employees.

PGPC has been a pioneer in geothermal energy since 1979. It currently operates two major geothermal steam fields in Tiwi, Albay and Mak-Ban, Batangas and Laguna, with a combined capacity of up to 300 megawatts (MW). The company is also expanding its operations through new concession areas across Luzon, expected to provide an additional 300 MW of baseload renewable energy in the coming years.

PGPC’s million-tree initiative reinforces the link between clean energy development and environmental protection, showing how renewable energy firms can actively support both national energy security and ecosystem health.
