Meta is teaming up with Midjourney to bring AI-generated images directly into its platforms. The partnership, announced by Meta’s new chief AI officer Alexandr Wang, involves licensing Midjourney’s “aesthetic technology” and collaborating on research.
Wang said the deal goes beyond using Midjourney’s tools, hinting at deeper integration with Meta’s AI systems. While the terms of the agreement remain undisclosed, the move supports Meta’s push to compete with OpenAI and Google in the AI space.
Meta has already started embedding AI imagery across its services. Facebook now has an option to create AI images when making a post. WhatsApp and Instagram also allow users to generate images within chats. The Meta AI app itself is designed around a feed of AI-generated photos and videos.
Midjourney, known for its advanced image and video generation, will strengthen these efforts. Meta expects the partnership to help users produce more polished and creative visuals across its platforms.
“We are incredibly impressed by Midjourney,” Wang said. “They have accomplished feats of technical and aesthetic excellence, and we are thrilled to be working closely with them.”
Despite the partnership, Midjourney CEO David Holz confirmed the lab remains independent and community-backed, with no outside investors.
