Member of the House of Representatives recently met with Rafael Mariano Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency. The meeting was intended to deepen understanding of the role of nuclear energy with the objective of addressing the country’s prevailing power issues. The meeting allowed key legislators to directly engage with Grossi at a critical juncture as the country needs to strengthen its energy security. Moreover, making nuclear energy a key part of the nation ‘s energy mix will bring down the cost of electricity for consumers and help spur economic development. “This dialogue, I hope will bring positive results and finally put nuclear energy at the top of the energy agenda. Director General Grossi’s expertise will be most valued by all of us at the legislature so as to better help us make nuclear energy a reality for the country. This will be invaluable for all Filipinos who are burdened with the high cost of electricity.” Said Mark O. Cojuangco, Representative of the 2nd District of Pangasinan and the chairman of the Special Committee on Nuclear Energy at the House of Representatives. The courtesy call comes shortly after President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to strengthening nuclear regulation and cooperation, following the signing of the Philippine Nuclear Law.
