GOAB 2025 highlights grassroots innovation and global partnerships
Geeks on a Beach (GOAB), the country’s pioneering beachside international tech and startup conference, returns for its 8th run on October 1-3, 2025, at JPark Island Resort Hotel in Mactan, Cebu. With the theme of resilience and rebuilding, this year’s event brings together innovators, investors, government leaders, and creatives to strengthen the Philippine startup ecosystem.
Symph founder and GOAB organizer Dave Overton said this year is about more than technology. “It’s about resilience, rebuilding, and how the startup community can help shape an ethical, sustainable, and brighter future for humanity,” he explained.
Government support for innovation
The Department of Information and Communication Technology (DICT) sees GOAB as a vital convergence point. Region 7 Director Rick Amores said, “We help build the digital infrastructure and cybersecurity backbone that startups need to thrive.” He cited the National Broadband Program and the eGovPH app, which now has 13 million users, as examples of enabling initiatives.
The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) highlighted the importance of bridging the gap between research and commercialization. Region 7 Director Tristan Abando said, “We want Filipinos to be creators and innovators, not just consumers.”
Meanwhile, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) pointed to mentorship as key for startup success. Region 7 Director Hope Melgar emphasized GOAB’s role in connecting mentors with young founders.
Spotlight on grassroots innovation
This year’s program expands to include grassroots initiatives across health care, creative hubs, music, and design. Among the highlights are Hillary Overton’s Learning Board for family care, Allen Tan’s Creative Club for artists, Mikiharu Yabe’s Door to Asia linking designers with communities, and Cara Angan’s September Fever music festival.
GOAB’s collaborative spirit also extends globally. Zero Ten Park announced a partnership with U.S.-based Gener8tor to link local startups with international networks and scale them across Southeast Asia.
A hub for collaboration
Since its launch in 2013, GOAB has been a catalyst for partnerships, investments, and mentorship. Overton noted, “GOAB is where collaboration occurs. It’s a place where resilience and creativity meet opportunity.”
With thousands expected to attend, GOAB 2025 cements Cebu’s role as a growing hub for innovation and inclusive startup growth.
