Johnson plays Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling author hired to work on the novels of celebrated writer Verity Crawford, played by Anne Hathaway. Lowen moves into the Crawford family home, where Verity lives with her husband Jeremy, played by Josh Hartnett, and their son Crew. As Lowen learns more about the family, she uncovers disturbing details that make her question what she believes.

For Johnson, Lowen’s grief and uncertainty are central to the role. “She ends up getting involved in this family and their web of secrets and lies and truths like a moth to the flame,” the actress said in the release. Lowen wants to succeed as a writer, but her vulnerable state begins to affect her judgment.

Hathaway praised the way Johnson balances visible emotion with mystery in her performance. Director Michael Showalter, who had wanted to work with Johnson, said the role suited her distinctive screen presence.
