New global study reveals how financial pressure, loneliness, and digital overload are affecting Filipino wellbeing

Filipinos are not simply dealing with stress. According to the AXA Mind Health Report 2026, many are navigating multiple emotional, financial, and social pressures simultaneously, creating a growing challenge for mental wellbeing across the country.
The global study, conducted by AXA in partnership with IPSOS, found that while some indicators show slight improvement, many Filipinos continue to struggle with emotional strain brought about by financial instability, social concerns, and the realities of an increasingly digital lifestyle.
Multiple Pressures, One Daily Reality
The report highlights that around 31% of Filipinos remain in a “languishing” state, a condition characterized by low wellbeing and difficulty coping with everyday challenges.
While mental health concerns are being discussed more openly today, many Filipinos continue to face overlapping pressures that affect how they work, study, and manage daily responsibilities.
According to the report, financial uncertainty and rising social tensions remain among the biggest concerns contributing to emotional strain.
Young Filipinos Feel the Weight the Most
The study found that younger Filipinos are experiencing particularly high levels of loneliness and sadness.
About 72% of Filipino youth reported feeling lonely or emotionally distressed, while the average daily screen time among young Filipinos has reached 7.5 hours.
Nearly all respondents, or 98%, said excessive screen use negatively affects their lives.
These effects include disrupted sleep, shorter attention spans, emotional exhaustion, and increased feelings of anxiety and stress. The findings suggest that digital fatigue is becoming a significant contributor to declining mental wellbeing among younger generations.
AI Becomes a New Source of Support
As emotional pressures grow, more Filipinos are turning to technology for support.
The report found that 29% of Filipinos regularly use AI-powered tools for mental health guidance and emotional support, exceeding the global average of 21%.
Most users are between 18 and 34 years old, with adoption particularly common among individuals already experiencing mental health challenges.
However, the study also revealed concerns about relying on artificial intelligence for emotional guidance. Around 33% of respondents reported feeling uneasy after receiving AI-generated advice, while 25% said recommendations from AI had led to harmful behavior.
These findings highlight both the opportunities and limitations of emerging technologies in mental health support.
Access Remains a Major Challenge
One of the report’s most significant findings is the continued difficulty Filipinos face when seeking professional mental health care.
Unlike global trends where awareness remains the primary barrier, Filipino respondents identified affordability as the biggest obstacle to accessing mental health services.
This gap between awareness and accessibility means that many people recognize the need for support but are unable to seek professional help due to financial constraints.
In response, AXA Philippines continues to promote mental health initiatives, including self-assessment tools and health plans that provide access to mental health consultations and coverage for select conditions.
A Call for Earlier Support
AXA Philippines President and CEO Ayman Kandil emphasized that today’s challenges are no longer occurring in isolation.
Instead, Filipinos are managing several pressures at once while trying to maintain productivity at school, work, and home.
The report suggests that mental wellbeing should not only be addressed during moments of crisis but supported proactively through accessible resources, healthier environments, and stronger community support systems.
Why It Matters
The AXA Mind Health Report 2026 paints a picture of a society carrying multiple emotional burdens at the same time. From financial uncertainty and social pressures to digital fatigue and loneliness, many Filipinos are struggling to find space to recover.
The findings reinforce the need for affordable mental health services, responsible use of digital tools, and stronger support systems that help people address challenges before they reach a breaking point.
