Chinese-American singer-songwriter Emei is leaning fully into drama, emotion, and theatrical pop with the release of her new EP, Night at the Opera, out now via Atlantic Records and Nice Life.

The five-track project marks a confident return to Emei’s musical theater roots, bringing together bold storytelling, bright pop hooks, and larger-than-life emotions.

For Emei, the EP is about embracing the expressive side of her artistry without holding back.

“I wanted to lean into being a theater kid again,” she shared. “You’re going to get all of the pain, emotion, and drama from me.”

Night at the Opera highlights Emei’s ability to turn personal feelings into songs that feel both emotionally honest and fun.

Across the EP, she explores heartbreak, self-awareness, frustration, and growth with a playful but sharp point of view.

The project was created with GRAMMY Award-winning songwriter Justin Tranter, known for work with Chappell Roan, Justin Bieber, and Selena Gomez, and GRAMMY Award-winning producer Ricky Reed, whose credits include Lizzo, Leon Bridges, and Phantogram.

Together, they helped shape a sound that feels dramatic, polished, and deeply personal.

“Right now, I’m the most truthful version of myself,” Emei said. “The music is fun, ridiculous, and honest. I’m doing exactly what I want to do.”

“Noah” Brings the Drama

Alongside the EP, Emei also released the official visualizer for “Noah,” which she describes as the project’s diss track.

The song is written as a message to her past self and to anyone who has encountered what she calls the “LA performative man.”

From Viral Breakthrough to Rising Pop Voice

Emei first gained major attention with her 2022 single “Late to the Party,” which found a strong audience on TikTok.

She followed it with “Scatterbrain,” which was named one of Spotify’s Best Pop Songs of 2023 and was later featured in the series Off Campus.
