The 3rd ASEAN Battery Technology Conference (ABTC) gathered over 340 delegates from more than 20 countries at SAii Laguna Phuket from August 27 to 29, 2025. The event marked a major step in advancing ASEAN’s clean energy goals and battery innovation leadership.
Hosted by the Thailand Energy Storage Technology Association (TESTA) with five regional partners, the conference launched the ASEAN Battery Safety Network (ABSN) and highlighted milestones in battery safety, innovation, and sustainability.
Key speeches stressed ASEAN’s growing role in the global clean energy shift. Thailand’s Secretary to the Minister of Industry, Pongpol Yodmuangcharoen, emphasized the country’s transition from EV assembly to battery cell production. Dr. Pimpa Limthongkul of TESTA underscored the importance of collaboration for safe and sustainable energy storage. Dr. Sing Yang Chiam of the Singapore Battery Consortium hailed ABSN as a platform for harmonized standards, while Dr. Rezal Khairi Bin Ahmad of NanoMalaysia Berhad called for stronger regional integration.
Highlights included:
- Launch of the ASEAN Battery Safety Network (ABSN).
- Signing of five strategic Memorandums of Understanding on swappable batteries, grid-scale BESS deployment, solid-state battery R&D, Euro-Asia energy storage cooperation, and NBRI–NMB collaboration.
- Release of a collaborative whitepaper on the ASEAN battery ecosystem.
- ABSN’s strategic partnership with UL Standards & Engagement.
- Talks from Nobel Laureate Prof. M. Stanley Whittingham and leading industry experts.
Panel discussions explored battery safety, AI in manufacturing, sodium-ion innovation, and future production milestones. The event reaffirmed ASEAN’s drive to lead in next-generation battery breakthroughs, build a resilient ecosystem, and accelerate the region’s clean energy ambitions.
