Surrounded by the ocean, Taiwan is full of natural beauty, especially in Taitung County, which looks out onto the vast Pacific and boasts very little industry, the preservation of the grand majority of its natural scenery, and an abundance of cultures, all reasons that nature-lovers frequent it. In fact, over the past ten years, a great number of Taiwanese people and foreign nationals who enjoy a slow pace of life have moved here, hence its reputation as a locale that is great to live in and perfect for the body, mind, and spirit.
So that Taitung’s slow-living atmosphere may be made available to more people, the Taitung County Government launched in late 2021 the first Taitung Spirit Festival, a series of events that revolve around therapy for the body, mind, and spirit. People in this field from Taitung and all over Taiwan hold a variety of therapeutic events (such as yoga, meditation, sound wave therapy, diet therapy, aromatherapy, limb therapy, and art therapy) in some of Taitung’s natural settings during the festival. To date, over 30,000 people have participated in Taiwan’s one and only body-mind-spirit program of recreational aesthetic held by a government agency.

The 2024 Taitung Spirit Festival is comprised of four themes of events. Everyone in Taiwan and abroad is welcome to personally experience the unique therapeutic energy that lies within the magical natural environment of Taitung. The series of events includes healing workshops healing rituals the International Exchange and Industry Forum and the Serene Journey of the Soul. For the workshops professional speakers will offer lengthy classes such as the stress-relief experience tailored to social workers in April the diet therapy and limb therapy workshops aimed at awakening the physical senses in May and the consciousness therapy workshops themed on interpreting dreams in November all of which look to bring people back to a better state of living and educate them on good ways to deal with problems.
To get more people into the body-mind-spirit milieu the healing rituals are held in beautiful outdoor spaces accompanied by soothing music therapeutic experiences/classes art therapy co-creation and a street fair. We plan to attract a lot of people with our big free events including Summer Therapy Fest in June where we will have tipsy yoga classes sounding stone interactive events seafood meals and performances of soothing music on Taitung’s most radiant beach. In September Autumn Therapy Fest will be held at the Guanshan Water Park where participants may do yoga with their families on the grass engage in forest therapy gardening therapy and sound wave therapy and enjoy food-and-agriculture education experiences.
This year the Taitung Spirit Festival will hold its first International Exchange and Industry Forum (August 23 – 25). Themed on natural therapy there will be speeches forums workshops experience events and museum tours. Also a Japanese forest therapy expert a nature therapist from Hong Kong and a Taiwanese professional will engage in exchange and share their ideas as they jointly explore the healing power of nature for the body mind and spirit and express what they hope for the future.
Taitung is a slow-paced community that people just love to visit again and again. The festival collaborates each year with local communities in bringing local features into the Serene Journey of the Soul events. In late October an ocean therapy experience and an Indigenous culture workshop will be held at the beach redefining your concept of travel by bringing true tranquility into the equation.
Though we have almost come to fully coexist with Covid-19 people have changed their views on psychological health and are looking inward to find a way to calm their minds and spirits.
