Alfamart franchising program empowers Filipino entrepreneurs and local communities
SM continues to support Filipino entrepreneurship through Alfamart’s new franchising program. The initiative aims to help micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) grow alongside the retail chain’s expanding footprint.
The program’s pilot run began in Laguna, featuring two franchise-owned stores. The first store opened in October 2024 with Engineer Leovino C. Datario, a long-time Alfamart lessor. The second, launched in August 2025, was in partnership with entrepreneur Arles A. Uy Jr., owner of AAU Corporation, which operates several Express Clean laundromats beside Alfamart branches.
By the end of September 2025, Alfamart had reached 2,337 stores nationwide. The franchising program represents the next phase of its growth, offering local partners a chance to invest, manage, and expand within their own communities.
“This reflects the SM group’s commitment to inclusive growth and entrepreneurship. By allowing tenants to evolve into franchisees, Alfamart is enabling MSMEs to scale alongside its own expansion, strengthening local communities and livelihoods,” said Harvey T. Ong, Chief Operating Officer of Alfamart Philippines.
Alfamart, part of SM’s retail food business, has become a familiar fixture in many neighborhoods. Its format combines the accessibility of a sari-sari store with the range of a supermarket, a model gaining popularity across Southeast Asia.
In partnership with Indonesia’s Alfamart, which operates more than 21,000 stores, Alfamart Philippines continues to offer a broad range of essentials at affordable prices. From groceries and frozen goods to personal care and SM Bonus products, it provides practical convenience for Filipino families.
