SM Cares is taking strong action to protect communities as the rainy season approaches by expanding its coastal cleanup drives nationwide.
From January to June 2025, the program mobilized 8,571 volunteers from various SM malls and coastal communities. Together, they collected 70,887 kilograms of trash from shorelines and waterways. This effort supports disaster resilience by reducing marine pollution and clearing waterways that can cause flooding.
“This isn’t just about picking up trash—it’s about saving homes, safeguarding health, and helping communities become more resilient to floods and diseases,” said Engr. Liza B. Silerio, SM Cares Program Director for the Environment.
The cleanup protects marine ecosystems and reduces the risk of storm surges and waterborne diseases. SM Cares is inviting the public to join its largest cleanup yet during the International Coastal Cleanup on September 20, 2025. The event will mobilize 40,000 volunteers, with the main activity at SM By the Bay.
SM Cares continues to drive sustainability through education, community engagement, and partnerships. As SM Supermalls celebrates its 40th year, it remains committed to integrating sustainable design, disaster resilience, and environmental stewardship in all 88 malls across the country.
