PLDT and Smart Communications, together with Ateneo de Zamboanga University (ADZU) and the Department of Education – Division of Zamboanga City, have launched two new literacy apps: “Apprende” for Chavacano and “Hinduan” for Tausug.
The initiative supports children’s learning in their native languages, ensuring education remains culturally rooted and accessible. Stephanie Orlino, Stakeholder Engagement Head of PLDT and Smart, said the project not only strengthens literacy but also safeguards local languages for future generations.
ADZU Grade School Principal Ellen Segurigan also highlighted the cultural value of the apps. She noted that students will now have the opportunity to learn while appreciating their heritage and connecting with peers through their mother tongue.
The apps promote both literacy and numeracy while helping preserve the Philippines’ linguistic heritage. With “Apprende” and “Hinduan,” PLDT and Smart complete a set of 13 learning apps created in partnership with various organizations.
This effort aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, specifically SDG 4 on Quality Education and SDG 11 on Sustainable Cities and Communities, by fostering inclusive learning and protecting cultural identity.
