PLDT has launched the country’s first Google Taara laser internet sites. The new system delivers fiber-like connectivity using beams of light instead of cables.
Three sites are now active: Talim Island in Rizal, Dipaluda in Isabela, and Bagong Pag-asa in Quezon City. These areas are difficult to reach with traditional fiber lines. Talim Island sits across a lake, Dipaluda is surrounded by mountains, and Bagong Pag-asa needs reliable backup to prevent outages.
Google’s X Moonshot Factory developed Taara, which can deliver speeds of up to 20 Gbps. This is enough to serve thousands of users at the same time. PLDT tested the system for more than a year before the rollout.
“This is a game-changer for us in connecting remote areas,” said Butch Jimenez, PLDT Chief Operating Officer and Head of Network.
Taara helps PLDT cut costs by removing the need for underwater or mountain cable installations. It also improves digital access for underserved communities. The company plans to expand the use of Taara to strengthen its nationwide fiber network.
