BASE Bahay Foundation (BASE), a non-profit group promoting sustainable building, gained international recognition at the Green Solutions Awards 2024-2025 by Construction 21 International. BASE’s bamboo housing design in the Philippines won both the Circular Economy Prize and the Low-Tech Prize, proving bamboo’s potential in affordable and eco-friendly construction.
Out of 194 applicants from 26 countries, BASE’s project was one of 36 recognized globally, proudly representing the Philippines. The awards program, supported by the French Ministry for Ecological Transition, Ademe, and the Global ABC/United Nations Environment Programme, honors practical solutions for ecological transition in building and urban sectors. Final winners will be announced at COP30 in Brazil this November.
The Circular Economy Prize jury commended BASE’s use of local bamboo to build strong, low-cost homes, while also noting its citizen involvement, compliance with standards, and replicability for emergency housing. The Low-Tech Prize jury praised the group’s Cement Bamboo Frame Technology (CBFT), globally known as Composite Bamboo Shear Walls (CBSW), for showing how simple, low-tech solutions can deliver resilient homes without costly heating and cooling systems.
“We are incredibly honored to be recognized by an international institution,” said Engr. Luis Felipe Lopez, General Manager of BASE. “This achievement reflects BASE’s commitment to innovation with low-tech solutions, engineered for maximum impact, and showcasing bamboo’s transformative role in building affordable, durable, and sustainable structures.”
With thousands of bamboo-based homes already built, BASE continues to show the world that sustainable, resilient housing is not only possible but happening now. These awards affirm its role as a leader in bamboo construction, driving new partnerships to expand eco-friendly housing worldwide.
