Feeling Less Motivated After Your Performance Review? You’Re Not Alone

Robert Walters Philippines research highlights the critical importance of growth, flexibility, and purpose in retaining top talent.

New research from global talent solutions company Robert Walters reveals that 23% of Filipino professionals feel less positive about their role following their latest performance review.

With 43% stating the process left them feeling more motivated and 34% reporting no impact on their engagement, organisations are actively strategising ways to maintain workforce morale heading into the second half of 2026.

Andrew Powell, Chief Commercial Officer at Robert Walters, comments: “Performance reviews are becoming increasingly important management moments, particularly as organisations look to balance worker needs while managing tight budgets. Employees want to know how their skills are valued, where they can progress, and whether the business is investing in their long-term development.”

Salary Expectations Defy Economic Challenges

Despite these broader economic uncertainties impacting businesses globally, the Robert Walters 2026 mid-year survey reveals that employee optimism remains high. Over half (53%) of Filipino professionals expect to receive a salary review this year. Conversely, 35% view a review as unlikely, 10% remain unsure, and only 2% have already received one.

While these findings suggest that formal salary and performance conversations carry immense weight in today’s market, professionals are increasingly looking beyond the pay packet. When asked what they value most from an employer, respondents ranked the following highest:

  • Excellent compensation & benefits (73%)
  • Flexible working conditions (47%)
  • Job security and stability (29%)

This demonstrates that organisations prioritising a holistic employee experience will be far better positioned to attract and retain top talent in a highly competitive market.

Driving Connection and Purpose in a Competitive Market

“Even though performance reviews positively impact employee attitudes toward their current roles, our research reveals that over 80% of Filipino professionals remain open to exploring new opportunities,” Kimberlyn Lu, Chief Executive Officer at Robert Walters Southeast Asia, adds. “This underscores the importance for organisations to look beyond standard engagement and ensure they are creating compelling reasons for employees to stay.”

According to the study, the primary drivers influencing a professional’s decision to remain with their current employer are:

  1. Opportunities for growth and advancement
  2. Flexibility in working hours and location
  3. A positive, inclusive company culture

Leadership style also plays a pivotal role. The majority of professionals (56%) favour transformational leaders who inspire and motivate change, followed by a laissez-faire approach that encourages autonomy (34%).

Lu continues: “The fact that over 80% of professionals in the Philippines remain open to new opportunities highlights just how competitive today’s talent market has become. Open and transparent communication is critical, not only to help employees feel connected to the organisation’s vision but also to understand what truly matters to them. It’s no longer just about offering competitive salaries; it’s about driving a sense of purpose and creating an environment where employees feel genuinely valued.”

Building a Workforce for the Future

As organisations navigate the remainder of 2026, fostering trust, connection, and purpose will be the key to retaining top talent in the Philippines. By investing in employee growth and creating flexible, inclusive workplaces, businesses can successfully position themselves as employers of choice.
