Darren Aronofsky, best known for intense dramas like Requiem for a Dream and Black Swan, shifts gears with Caught Stealing. This time, he brings audiences a crime film with an oddly humorous tone, designed to be fun and fast-paced.
Based on Charlie Huston’s 1998 novel, the story follows Hank Thompson, played by Austin Butler. Once a baseball player, now a washed-up bartender in New York, Hank stumbles into the criminal underworld after his neighbor Russ, played by Matt Smith, asks him to look after his cat. What begins as a simple favor spirals into chaos and danger.
Aronofsky admits he wanted to make something lighter. “This was first and foremost fun—a movie that for two hours would fully distract and hold your attention,” he says.
Huston, who adapted their own book into the screenplay, shares that the project has been personal since the late 1990s. “There’s a ton of my own lived experience in the main character. Darren brings emotional depth and dark humor that fit the story perfectly.”
Caught Stealing combines crime, humor, and Aronofsky’s signature intensity. Audiences can expect a darkly funny adventure when the film opens in Philippine cinemas on September 10.
