Cavetown shares Rainbow Gal ahead of Running With Scissors release
Singer-songwriter and producer Cavetown, also known as Robin Skinner, has revealed details of his upcoming album Running With Scissors, set for release on January 16 under Futures Music Group. Alongside the announcement, Cavetown dropped his latest single and video, Rainbow Gal, a synth-driven love song inspired by his relationship.
Built with 8-bit textures and glitchy vocals, Rainbow Gal explores the grounding comfort his partner brings him even from a distance. “She brings all the color into my life,” Skinner shares. The track follows his earlier single Baby Spoon, which came with an intimate, dreamlike video.
Running With Scissors reflects Cavetown’s growth after a two-year healing process. The album explores themes of love, identity, masculinity, and self-discovery while addressing heavier subjects like anxiety and self-doubt. It also highlights personal milestones, including falling in love and welcoming his first sibling with a 26-year age gap.
From acoustic storytelling to hyperpop glitches and math-rock textures, the album blends tenderness with raw emotion. “I wanted to make myself sound more brave,” Skinner says. “And I wanted to impress people with my voice, like, ‘wow, he’s actually got some pipes.’”
Cavetown, known for his intimate yet expansive sound, has grown from recording in his Cambridge bedroom to amassing billions of streams and multiple platinum singles. He has performed at major festivals such as Glastonbury and Lollapalooza, and toured with AJR, Pierce the Veil, and Mother Mother.
The album also continues his commitment to community. Through his This Is Home initiative, Cavetown has raised over $650,000 for LGBTQ+ organizations worldwide.
Rainbow Gal and Baby Spoon are now available on streaming platforms. Running With Scissors will be released on January 16.
