Icona Pop Turn Heartbreak, Healing and Friendship into New Album ‘Ritual’

The Swedish pop duo’s 10-track album finds Caroline Hjelt and Aino Jawo navigating motherhood, change and emotional release while returning to the dancefloor with new focus track “Hurt.”

Icona Pop are turning some of their most personal experiences into music made for movement.

The multi-platinum Swedish duo of Caroline Hjelt and Aino Jawo have released their new album, Ritual, through Ultra Records and Iconic Sound Recordings. Alongside the album comes an official visualizer for its focus track, “Hurt,” co-directed by Icona Pop and Nicole Walker.

Across 10 tracks, Ritual brings together euphoric electronic production and emotionally open songwriting as the longtime friends explore friendship, healing, motherhood, heartbreak, reinvention and joy.

It is a record built around a simple but meaningful idea: sometimes moving forward begins by allowing yourself to feel everything first.

A new chapter for Icona Pop

Ritual arrived during a period of major change for both members of Icona Pop.

Caroline and Aino became mothers within days of each other, returned to Sweden after years of living in Los Angeles, and went through personal experiences involving heartbreak, anxiety and other life changes.

Instead of keeping those emotions outside the studio, the duo allowed them to shape the album.

Icona Pop said the recording process gave them a safe environment to explore difficult feelings without rules, ultimately making the project more honest and therapeutic.

That openness also reflects how their relationship has evolved. Beyond being musical partners, Caroline and Aino describe themselves today as mothers, entrepreneurs, leaders and longtime friends who have continued to grow alongside each other.

“It’s always been us against the world,” the duo shared in the release, adding that they now feel they have built a world of their own.

‘Hurt’ finds acceptance after heartbreak

The emotional core of the album comes into focus on “Hurt.”

Beginning with sparse keys and a fractured vocal loop before building into a heavier electronic release, the track looks at the stage of heartbreak when pain slowly begins to turn into acceptance.

Caroline described the song as being about letting go rather than seeking revenge.

The idea is not that the hurt has disappeared. Instead, the song recognizes that memories can still matter even when a relationship has ended—and that healing can exist alongside sadness.

By its climax, “Hurt” shifts from solitude toward the feeling of returning to the dancefloor with friends, carrying the pain but no longer being defined by it.

That balance between vulnerability and movement runs throughout Ritual.

Previously released songs including “Yellow Top,” “Ritual” featuring Daya, “Dance To This,” and “Butterfly Feelings” each offer a different entry point into the album’s emotional world.

Together, the songs connect deeply personal experiences with the kind of energetic, dancefloor-ready pop that has long defined Icona Pop.

The title track also reflects the larger theme behind the project: the small rituals people turn to when trying to reconnect with themselves, regain energy and move forward.

Friendship remains at the center

For all the changes surrounding Icona Pop, one element remains constant: the friendship between Caroline and Aino.

The pair first emerged from Stockholm’s club scene before reaching global audiences with their 2012 breakout hit “I Love It” featuring Charli XCX.

The song went on to sell more than 10 million copies and surpass one billion global streams, according to the press release. Their 2013 debut album, This Is… Icona Pop, was followed by international touring, collaborations and performances across major television shows and festivals.

In 2023, the duo returned with CLUB ROMANTECH, their first album in a decade.

Ritual now continues that evolution, but with Caroline and Aino approaching pop music from a different place in their lives.

Instead of simply chasing the energy of the club, they are using it as a space for connection and emotional release.

As Caroline puts it, people can still dance even when everything is not okay.

Taking ‘Ritual’ on the road

Icona Pop will also bring the new record to the stage with headline dates in North America and Scandinavia in 2026.

The announced North American dates include performances in Brooklyn, Chicago, Las Vegas and Los Angeles, while the Scandinavian run includes stops in Göteborg, Lund, Oslo, Norrköping, Stockholm and Copenhagen.

The official tour poster included in the release carries Ritual‘s bold red visual identity, while another supplied photo by Teitur Ardal shows Caroline and Aino together in a more intimate setting, reinforcing the friendship at the heart of the album.
