Instagram has finally released a dedicated iPad app, 15 years after its original debut on smartphones. Starting September 3, users can download the new app, which places Reels at the heart of the experience.
Unlike the mobile app, the iPad version opens directly to a feed of Reels, Instagram’s answer to TikTok. Stories remain accessible at the top, and a “Following” tab offers traditional photo feeds, including a chronological view.
The larger screen allows smoother navigation. Comments appear beside full-size Reels, while the DMs page mirrors Messenger’s desktop look, with inbox and active chats side by side.
Meta also confirmed that this updated layout is “coming soon” to Android tablets, broadening access for users who prefer larger devices.
For years, Instagram head Adam Mosseri dismissed the iPad app, saying demand was not high enough. But with TikTok facing political hurdles in the US, and more young users spending time on tablets, the company finally pushed forward.
Instagram continues to double down on Reels, adding reposting, longer clips, and fast-forward options, while courting creators from rival platforms. The iPad release signals the platform’s focus on short-form video as it expands beyond smartphones.
