How Chowking Builds Careers and Connections with Puso
For four decades, Chowking has been part of countless Filipino lives. It has witnessed family gatherings, study breaks, and milestones shared over siopao, halo-halo, and lauriat meals. But behind every serving is another story—of people whose careers and lives grew within its walls.

Two of those stories belong to John David Urbi and Fatima “Timi” Abutog. Both found purpose and connection through Chowking’s culture of puso.
John’s Journey from Dishwasher to Leader
John started at Chowking in 2006 as a working student. His role was simple—wash dishes to support his family. But his growth was anything but simple. Through hard work and humility, he moved from dishwasher to cook, then to restaurant manager, and now serves as Area Manager.
He credits leaders who believed in him. “Results are important, pero mas importante na nagdadagdag ka ng value sa iba,” John said. His journey shows that growth is possible when leadership is rooted in care.
Today, he mentors others the same way he was guided. “Be open to learnings,” he tells his team. “Every role, every experience teaches you something that lasts.”
Timi’s Story of Return and Rediscovery
Fatima “Timi” Abutog joined Chowking as a management trainee in 2011. She rose to store manager, later moving into systems and business center roles. She left the company to explore, but realized something was missing. “In other workplaces, I felt like just another number,” she said.
When she returned, she found a more innovative Chowking—modern but still full of heart. “The humility to learn, the customer focus, the fun—hindi nagbago,” she said. Her comeback renewed her purpose to lead with compassion and build meaningful connections at work.
A Culture of Puso and Purpose
Both John and Timi credit Chowking’s people-first culture for their growth. “May puso, no matter what,” said Timi. John echoed this, saying leaders who cared gave him confidence to believe in himself.
Chowking’s way centers on people before performance. It’s where careers grow, friendships form, and every success is shared.
A Legacy Built on People
As Chowking celebrates 40 years, it celebrates not just its food but the lives it has touched. “John and Timi’s stories remind us that beyond the food we serve, Chowking is about the people who bring our brand to life,” said Chowking President Ken Lingan.
Chowking’s real legacy is found in its people—those who serve with passion, lead with humility, and give every meal a touch of puso.
