AirAsia Cebu disaster support boosts community recovery and travel access
AirAsia is reinforcing its presence in Cebu with a clear mission. Support communities. Strengthen resilience. Improve access to safe and affordable travel. The airline announced a series of disaster response and community development programs while expanding its route network from Mactan Cebu International Airport.

Cebu has struggled after the magnitude 6.9 earthquake and Typhoon Tino. Many families lost homes. Many lost livelihoods. AirAsia moved fast to help. The company provided humanitarian flights for volunteers, rescue teams and essential equipment. The MMDA search and rescue team flew to Cebu the day after the quake and was among the first to respond.
AirAsia employees across Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and Cambodia shared messages of support for Cebu. They offered a moment of silence for the victims and honored the courage of responders. AirAsia Philippines CEO Capt. Suresh Bangah called the situation heartbreaking. He said compassion and collaboration will help Cebu rise again.
AirAsia will donate PHP15 for every seat sold from November 15 to January 14, 2025. Expected assistance may reach PHP9 million. The funds will support relief groups and grassroots partners, including Bike Scouts. This group has long worked in disaster areas. Volunteers bike into isolated zones when larger vehicles cannot enter. They carry communication gear, supplies and updates for communities cut off by typhoons, floods and landslides.
Last year, Bike Scouts received a grant for workshops that trained more than 200 responders. The new funding will help distribute relief items, fix damaged community structures and run more resilience programs. AirAsia Foundation will also support other social enterprises in affected areas to help rebuild homes and livelihoods.
AirAsia Foundation Executive Director Mun Ching Yap said the foundation aims to help communities recover stronger. Since 2012, it has raised over USD 4 million for post disaster efforts across ASEAN.
AirAsia also expanded its Cebu network to support long term recovery. The airline launched two new international routes and three new domestic flights. New links include Kuala Lumpur and Macao, plus local flights to Davao, Iloilo and Caticlan. These routes give travelers more options and help boost economic activity across the Visayas and Mindanao.
The first Kuala Lumpur Cebu flight received a water cannon welcome. Cebu leaders and tourism officials joined AirAsia executives during the launch. The new flights connect Cebu to more than 160 destinations across Asia, Australia, the Middle East and Europe.
Capt. Bangah said the goal is simple. Strengthen Cebu as a regional hub. Create mobility. Support local communities while offering affordable travel.
