Alibaba Cloud Named a Leader in Gartner® Magic Quadrant™ for Generative AI Model Providers

Alibaba Cloud, a global leading provider of AI infrastructure and the intelligence backbone of Alibaba Group, has been named a Leader in the 2026 Gartner® Magic Quadrant™ for Generative AI Model Providers. It has also been named a Leader in the 2026 Gartner® Magic Quadrant™ for Strategic Cloud Platform Services.

Alibaba Cloud believes the dual recognition reflects its sustained capabilities in AI and cloud platforms, driven by its advanced AI models and full-stack AI infrastructure.

Advancing generative AI with a comprehensive model portfolio

Gartner defines the generative AI model providers market as “vendors that develop and offer foundation GenAI models. These models are designed for enterprise use to create new content, such as text, image, audio, video, and others. Providers make these models commercially available for enterprise consumption through APIs, software development kits (SDKs), platforms, marketplaces, and licensing agreements, with documented capability, safety, security, life cycle, and commercial terms”. This marks the first time Gartner has published a Magic Quadrant report on Generative AI Model Providers.

Alibaba Cloud offers high-performance AI models led by its multimodal Qwen model family, with both open-sourced and commercial versions in all sizes. Its recent release, Qwen3.8-Flash, is an open-weight multimodal Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) model featuring a 125 billion-parameter main model with 6 billion activated per token. So far, Alibaba has open-sourced more than 460 models, spawning over 300,000 derivative models and accumulating more than 3 billion global downloads.

Underpinning these AI capabilities is Alibaba Cloud’s global cloud infrastructure, distinguished by deep-rooted strength across the Asia-Pacific region. Alibaba Cloud now operates 106 availability zones across 31 regions worldwide, providing resilient cloud and AI infrastructure to support customers around the world in their digital transformation journeys.

According to Gartner, in 2025, the total GenAI model market reached $13.0 billion, with first-party foundation models representing $11.4 billion of that total. Moving forward, the market is projected to grow at an extraordinary compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 59.9% for GenAI models overall and 55.2% for foundation models specifically through 2030. By 2030, the total market is expected to reach $139.2 billion, driven by both general foundation models (forecast at $105.4 billion) and domain-specific or specialized models (forecast at $33.9 billion).

Delivering a full-stack AI cloud strategy

Gartner report for Strategic Cloud Platform Services evaluates standardized, automated public cloud offerings integrating infrastructure services, platform services, and transformation services, to help enterprises select the best long-term strategic hyperscaler to scale and innovate their business.
