World Sleep Day Discusses The Disadvantages of Sleep Deprivation

If the thought of hearing the word sleep makes you wanna jump into bed, close your eyes and have a good dream while snoring, then you might be sleep deprived.

Getting enough sleep is one of the things that most students, young professionals and other people take for granted, just like a good balanced meal, it greatly affects our health for it plays an important role in our daily lives.

Adults must keep in mind that they need to have 7-8 hours of sleep everyday to fully rest and recharge their bodies for the activities the next day. As we drift off to unconsciousness and sleep, our body begins its night-shift work like healing damaged cells, boosting the immune system, recovering from the day’s tasks and preparing or recharging the heart and cardiovascular system for the following day.

Some of the important things about sleep and the lack of it were discussed during the World Sleep Day event conducted at Ronac Lifestyle Center in Makati City and it was led by Uratex, the country’s leading and trusted foam country since 1968.

In a worldwide statistics, Philippines ranked as the fifth country with the worst sleepers because the people here usually get an average of only six hours and 22 minutes of sleep and sleep deprivation in the country affects around 50 million Filipinos, considering it a national issue.

Lack of proper sleep regularly can lead to circadian rhythm disorders, it is a term that pertains to a person’s internal body clock that regulates the 24-hour cycle of biological processes and the body’s very own timer that triggers it for natural sleep and wake cycle.

For adults, a dip in energy usually happens in the middle of the night and after lunch time. Noticeable big dips on this routine commonly means that an individual is sleep-deprived or did not get enough rest.

Circadian rhythm disorders occur when there is a mismatch on the internal body clock due to the continuous disruption of sleep patterns. One of the most common disorder falling in this category is delayed sleep that causes a person to feel tired at a later time than the usual. People with this kind of disorder are usually the night owls, or those who feel more productive, alert, and creative late at night.

On the other hand, there is opposite to circadian rhythm disorder which is called the advanced sleep phase disorder which is defined by regular early bedtimes (6PM to 9PM), a habit that is very common among the elderly.

However, in our country, one very common sleep problem is shift work disorder caused by irregular sleeping patterns from night shifts. Common among business processing outsource (call center) employees, the disorder arises when the circadian rhythm cannot properly adjust to changing sleep patterns. Shift work disorder can often lead to problems like excessive sleepiness and insomnia.

But you might be wondering what does it requires to achieve a good sleep.

According to the World Association of Sleep Medicine, there are numerous ways that an individual can do to improve their sleeping patterns. The following are tips you can follow:

  1. Refraining from using your bed for regular activities such as eating, working and the like
  2. Avoid intake of any caffeine six hours before bedtime.
  3. Eating a light meal for dinner.
  4. Limiting naps to not more than 45 minutes.
  5. Creating a comfortable sleeping environment like using the right mattress and bedding, keeping the room dark and well-ventilated.

For sleep deprivation being a major issue in our country, several big names in the industry took a leap in helping to solve the problem.

Among them are the Philippine Society of Sleep Medicine (PSSM) composed of physicians and sleep doctors, and the World Sleep Society, an association of sleep specialists focused on advancing sleep health worldwide by encouraging education and promoting sleep-focused research.

Partnering with these professionals is Uratex, The Sleep Specialist, the leading manufacturer of innovative sleep solutions. The company has been focused in creating quality sleep innovations like specialized mattresses and pillows that can help improve an individual’s rest.

In fact, they had come together last March 16 for World Sleep Day, an annual event that observes sleep importance and tackles issues like better sleep education which was organized by the World Sleep Day Committee.
