Known for their blend of sounds from contemporary R&B, electronica, and 70s to 80s inspired synth-pop, London-based four-piece PREP share a delightful rendition of Harry Styles’ hit single “As It Was”. Taking a vastly different direction from the original upbeat track, the band’s loungey version of “As It Was” pulls listeners into the PREP universe, which wouldn’t be complete without a saxophone solo. On their decision to cover the song, Tom Havelock from PREP explains, “We were booked into a studio in Austin Texas to record a Dire Straits cover we’d been planning for a while, then the day before we heard ‘As It Was’ and straight away switched tack.”
“It’s hard to find songs of other people’s where you can sing them and feel like they’re your own. And this one’s an unlikely contender,” he continues, “there are so many really personal details in the lyrics – but something about the situation we were in (back on the road for the first time since the pandemic, having an incredible trip across the US but also missing home and family, and trying to work out where those 2 years had gone) meant it really chimed with how we were feeling.”
PREP is gearing up to release their brand new EP out September 16th, with tracks including previously released singles “The Kid”, “Speaking Silence”, and “15th Floor”. The band will kick off their Asia tour in November this year, with additional dates in more cities to be announced.
