Multi-talented singer, songwriter, musician, actor Simu Liu has released his highly anticipated debut EP entitled ANXIOUS-AVOIDANT, on his own Markham Valley Records.
Music is a big passion for Simu, and his unmistakable talent is something he has been nurturing since he was very young. He studied piano as a child and was heavily influenced by the well-crafted pop songs of the likes of Backstreet Boys, *NSYNC and Usher and then as he grew up, more guitar led artists such as Coldplay and John Mayer. With his debut EP, Simu presents an array of beautifully crafted songs that are packed full of stadium filling hooks.
Simu adds, “ANXIOUS-AVOIDANT marks the beginning of my journey into music. I’ve always been an admirer of the power of songwriting and I’m hoping that these four songs on the EP will give listeners a window into a different part of me. Tonally, I wanted to create a sound that felt familiar but mature, relevant but also timeless. I draw a lot of inspiration from bands like Coldplay and One Republic, as well as artists like John Mayer and Lewis Capaldi. The name comes from a form of attachment style, which was recently popularized in culture and media. Anxious-avoidants are some of the most turbulent and insecure daters, and that also happens to be exactly what I am. To celebrate, I decided to write songs that encapsulated this chaos.”
A true rarity in every arena, he projects a distinct voice on screen in various blockbuster films such as Barbie and Marvel’s Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings, he is a New York Times-bestselling author, for the memoir We Were Dreamers: An Immigrant Superhero Origin Story, and now as a dynamic singer, songwriter, and musician.
In 2021 he starred in the first Asian-fronted movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings which marked the next step on his musical journey. He recorded the fan favourite “Hot Soup” for Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings: The Album. He cultivated an inimitable sound with songs like “Don’t.” Beyond praise from Good Morning America, BuzzFeed, Pop Sugar, and more, Rolling Stone hailed it as “heartfelt, inspirational.”
Simu will be performing his new EP live for the first time at his debut headline show in Los Angeles on December 13th at the iconic Hotel Café. Tickets go on sale Saturday November 18th @ 10am PT.
