The RP Blu Girls put up a resilient display against Australia in their opening match of the WBSC U-18 Women’s Softball World Cup Group C, before losing 7-4. The game, which took place in Dallas, Texas USA was interrupted by a two-hour and 19-minute lightning delay.
Before the stoppage, Australia had built a 5-0 leaD. But the Blu Girls rallied in the bottom of the fifth inning, stringing together four hits, including a two-run homer by Mylia Perez, to cut the deficit to 5-4. Perez’s outstanding performance saw her go 3-for-4 with a single, a double, and a home run, coming just a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. However, Australia’s Arwen Cavanagh entered the game in relief and pitched three scoreless innings, securing the win for Australia by allowing only one hit and one walk.
“We’re proud of the fight the girls showed today. It’s a tough loss, but I have faith in them,” said ASAPHIL President Jean Henri Lhuillier. “We have a young, talented team, and I’m confident they’ll bounce back stronger in the next game. We have to keep believing and keep fighting.”
In another Group C matchup, Canada dominated Mexico with a 9-0 win.
Tomorrow morning, the Philippines will be facing Mexico followed by another challenging match against Ireland in the afternoon. The team hopes to bounce back from their initial loss and put their best foot forward in these crucial games as they hope to make a comeback in the upcoming matches of the tournament.
