Efforts from various sectors to educate the public on protecting themselves online seem to be paying off with the recent drop in online fraud. Information and insights firm TransUnion reported a 59.4% drop in suspected digital fraud attempts originating from the Philippines in the second quarter of the year. The biggest impact was in telecommunications, with a 98.7% reduction. [1]

Although the country bucked the global trend which rose by 16.5% across industries, fraud attempts involving travel and leisure still surged by 198.5%, followed by communities which jumped by 163.8%, and gaming which went up by 51.4%.

Since data protection and safety is a difficult challenge in the digital age, Globe intensified its #MakeITSafePH program to protect the public and businesses from becoming victims of cybercrimes due to increased digitalization. #MakeITSafePH promotes online vigilance among consumers and businesses and helps keep them away from cybercriminals and fraudsters.

“As a leader of the digital lifestyle, Globe takes it upon itself to help the society as a whole to be safe from numerous threats facing anyone using the internet—from viruses, Trojan, and Ransomware which put multi-million-peso businesses at risk, to hacking attempts for illicit purposes, to name a few,” said Anton Bonifacio, Globe Chief Information Security Officer.

Globe Business has taken a more proactive stance in protecting small and large enterprises and government agencies. Aside from providing cybersecurity tools and solutions, Globe Business shares practical tips and easy-to-digest information about the various threats an organization may face. This is to empower its clients and help them ensure that employees are aware of their responsibility to safeguard sensitive data.

Globe remains steadfast in promoting online vigilance among the general public to protect them from unscrupulous individuals waiting for opportunities to hack their accounts, commit identity theft, and engage in fraudulent activities.

Globe also promotes digital citizenship and responsibility through the Digital Thumbprint Program (DTP), which conducts online workshops and provides e-modules to teach students, teachers, and parents about online safety and security, online etiquette and responsibility, and digital empowerment.

Globe recently ramped up its battle against online child pornography by investing $2.7 million in content filtering systems and blocking sites. In line with this, the company beefs up its digital platforms such as the toll-free Bantay Bata (#163) and mental health support services, toll-free HopeLine, and telemedicine providers KonsultaMD and HealthNow.

It has also partnered with the UK-based Internet Watch Foundation to bolster its fight against online sexual abuse and exploitation of children and the Canadian Centre for Child Protection Unite to identify illegal websites and block them out of its network. There is also support for the #SaferKidsPH campaign, which looks to maximize awareness on protection measures when it comes to Online Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Children (OSAEC).

Globe strongly supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly UN SDG No. 9, which highlights the roles of infrastructure and innovation as crucial drivers of economic growth and development, and UN SDG 17, which highlights the value of partnerships in achieving the sustainable development goals. It is committed to upholding the United Nations Global Compact principles and the UN SDGs.
