Three Generika-Ayala Lifesavers pairs joined the Belo Philippine Superliga (PSL) Beach Volleyball Challenge Cup held at Sands at SM by the Bay last May 4 to 7, 2017. But it was the men’s division pair that chained victory after victory until they claimed the Championship in the final game. Generika-Ayala’s Anthony Arbasto and Calvin Sarte bested Cignal HD’s EJ Ramos and Edmar Bonono in two straight sets.
Winning the Gold Medal was a fitting reward for the Arbasto and Sarte tandem. A relatively new pair given that Arbasto’s original partner had to finish his thesis, the two just had to rely on their skills and shared passions to perform well. They only had three days to train before the Cup as Sarte had to travel from Davao.
The pairs in the women’s division also produced great results. While Generika-Ayala B’s Kathleen Arado and Rosalie Pepito did not reach the quarterfinals, Generika-Ayala A’s Patty Jane Orendain and Fiola Mae Ceballos were undeafeated until the finals when they lost to Petron Sprint 4T’s Bernadette Pons and Cherry Ann Rondina. Orendain and Ceballos went home with the Silver Medal.
Playing at the Belo PSL Cup posed a rigorous challenge to the Generika-Ayala players. Keeping-up with the prowess of other competitors was just part of it. They had to endure the intense heat, and they had to find ways to recover quickly between the continuous games. For the Orendain and Ceballos pair, they faced a challenge of expectations. While they finished strong, they were not considered as front-runners since they were up against Pons and Rondina who previously won the UAAP Beach Volleyball Tournament. But despite this, the Generika-Ayala players still proved their skills and mettle at the Belo PSL Cup – a historic victory for the team as it was their first foray in a beach volleyball competition.
The Generika-Ayala Lifesavers are aiming for even more wins and better standings at the upcoming 2017 PSL All Filipino Conference that will start on June 6, 2017. While not all pairs took home medals in this Belo PSL Cup, they were very happy with the results.
