In an unlikely yet powerful union, breakthrough artist Ruel again joins forces with chart-topping indie rockers DMA’S for new single ‘We’re A Pair Of Diamonds’ – the second of two masterful collaborative tracks.
‘We’re A Pair Of Diamonds’ was debuted in front of a swooning sold-out Enmore theatre last October, when Ruel joined DMA’S onstage to perform an acoustic version of the unfinished, never-before-heard alt-pop ballad. Originally penned during writing sessions for Ruel’s debut album 4TH WALL, before being pulled out of the vault for this one-off, surprise performance. The Enmore crowd’s reaction and overwhelming online support was the final push the group needed to finish and release these two songs.
“I had a blast writing this track with the boys a couple years ago. We all immediately clicked in the studio and the song just wrote itself. I love how this song is a perfect meld of our two sounds, you can hear just as much of DMA’S as Ruel in my opinion.” – Ruel
“We wrote Diamonds the first week we got in the studio with Ruel, with a verse Tooky had been sitting on for years. We changed the key to fit Ruel’s voice and the rest of the song crystallised into this beautiful demo that’s ended up here… we hope you like it.”
– Matt Mason, DMA’S
‘What A Life’ and ‘We’re A Pair Of Diamonds’ both beautifully capture the spontaneity and creative chemistry between Ruel and DMA’S – resulting in the two songs that are undoubtedly collaborative in genre and style, pairing the best of DMA’S sound with Ruel’s striking vocals. ‘We’re A Pair Of Diamonds’ is at once intimate and anthemic; a stadium sized duet describing a love that was lost before given the time to fully bloom. ‘It was inevitable, our stars were meant to fall’.
Ruel is the youngest ever recipient of an ARIA Award, following the now 21-year-old singer/songwriter’s discovery at the young age of 12. He boasts over 3 billion streams globally, has sold out the iconic Sydney Opera House twice, completed four sold-out world tours and taken home two MTV Europe Awards. Ruel has collaborated with fashion houses such as Prada, Fendi and Louis Vuitton, featured in publications such as GQ and VOGUE, and released three award-winning EPs ahead of his beloved 2023 debut record 4TH WALL.
DMA’S are firmly established in the global indie rock scene – taking home ARIA for Best Group and earning their second top 5 UK chart result for their fourth studio album How Many Dreams? last year. The band embarked on their biggest run of Australian shows to date in 2023, a mammoth 19 shows across 16 cities and towns, as well as playing to adoring crowds across UK/Europe, including a sold-out show at London’s OVO Arena Wembley and the main stage of Reading & Leads Festival. The trio also took out triple j’s Hottest 100 of Like A Version with their iconic cover of Cher’s ‘Believe’.
